Most people trying to fix their hamstrings are doing the right things in the wrong order.

That is the whole problem. Not effort, not discipline, not the exercises themselves. Order.

If you have already read why your hamstrings are so tight, you know the tissue is usually guarded rather than short. What follows is what to do about that — the sequence I use in practice, over more than 7 years and what you can do at home tonight without equipment.

What is the right order to fix tight hamstrings?

This is my actual order of operations. Skip a step and the next one will not hold.

First, the assessment. Posture, palpation, pulse, history, plus a fear and burnout screen. This decides everything that follows, because a neural restriction, an overloaded glute and a depleted Water element need three different treatments.

Second, the nervous system. Before anything touches the hamstring. Usually The Hush or gentle Airpuncture™ to move the body out of freeze and protection. There is no point negotiating with a tissue that is still on guard duty.

Third, the local and upstream work. Now the hamstrings — and the glutes, low back and sacrum feeding them.

Fourth, APEX CODE Method™ if there is a clear fear or emotional driver underneath.

Fifth, strengthening and movement retraining. Only now. This is the step everyone starts with and it is why it so often fails.

The principle: you cannot load a frightened tissue into safety. You make it safe, then you load it.

Does stretching or strengthening work better for hamstrings?

Strengthening. The evidence on this is consistent and it surprises people.

Loaded eccentric work — lengthening the muscle under load rather than pulling on it passively — produces flexibility gains equal to static stretching over a six-week period, with strength gains on top. Clinicians increasingly recommend it on efficiency grounds alone: same range, more capacity, same time spent.

The mechanism is the interesting part. It may not be lengthening tissue at all. It appears to shift the muscle’s optimal length and build capacity — which is another way of saying it teaches the nervous system that this range is safe, because you have demonstrated you can produce force there.

That is exactly what a guarded hamstring needs. Not a longer rope. Proof.

I agree with the research completely on this point. Loaded eccentric work builds capacity and capacity is what permission is made of.

What are the best exercises for tight hamstrings?

They are not the same for everybody and the gap between these two people is wide.

If you are a deconditioned desk worker in your fifties

Start with supine hamstring slides using a strap or towel. Lie on your back, use the strap to support the leg and lower slowly — the slow lowering is the entire point. Three sets of eight to ten.

Progress to single-leg Romanian deadlifts with very light weight or bodyweight only. Emphasise control on the way down. Not depth. Not load. Control.

If you are a trained athlete

Nordic hamstring curls with an eccentric focus. Single-leg RDLs with a dumbbell. Glute-ham raises.

Always paired with full-body coordination drills, because in this population the hamstring is usually tight from doing somebody else’s job rather than from weakness.

What can I do at home tonight with no equipment?

This is the part you can start with this evening. It works on the back line directly.

  • Self-tuina on BL-40, in the middle of the knee crease. Thumb pressure, one to two minutes each side, breathing slowly into the lower belly the whole time. The breath is not decoration — it is what tells the system this is safe.
  • BL-57, in the belly of the calf. Same approach, one to two minutes each side.
  • Light massage or gua sha over the sacrum and lower back.
  • KD-3, on the inner ankle, with warmth from your own hands.
  • Breath work. Four-seven-eight or simple diaphragmatic breathing lying down with your knees bent.
  • Moxa over the BL-23 area on the lower back is genuinely excellent, but only if you have been shown how to do it safely.

Notice what is missing from that list. There is no stretching in it.

How long does it take to loosen hamstrings for good?

Faster than most people expect, provided you treat the right thing.

Week one. The hamstrings feel less angry after work. Sitting is easier without that pulling sensation. Sleep improves or you stop waking to urinate as often. Your startle response settles.

Week six. A noticeable increase in forward fold range. The backs of the legs feel warmer and more alive. Afternoon energy is steadier.

Read that first list again. Almost none of it is about your legs. That is not an accident — it is the Water element coming back online and the hamstrings are simply the part you can see.

The marker that actually matters

I tell people not to measure range of motion.

Measure how the tissue feels: less dense, warmer, less reactive.

That is the real signal and it arrives before the range does. When the nervous system lets go, the range follows on its own. Chasing the range directly is how you end up back where you started.

Why do my hamstrings keep tightening again?

Because the conditions came back.

The single biggest mistake is returning to old patterns of chronic stress, poor sleep or cold exposure without recovery. The hamstrings did not fail. The environment reverted and they did their job.

What I prescribe to prevent it:

  • Warmth, especially the lower back and the feet. Non-negotiable.
  • Consistent hydration with electrolytes.
  • And the one nobody expects: deliberate letting-go practice. Short daily sessions where you consciously release effort. Not meditation exactly — practice at the specific skill of stopping.

That last one is the whole thing. The nervous system has to learn that softening is safe. Without that lesson, the hamstrings will tighten again the moment life speeds up and every hour you spent on Nordics will be overwritten in a fortnight.

The deepest fix is always the same: give the Water element enough safety and resource that the back line no longer has to stand guard.

What if none of this works?

Then the hamstrings were never the question.
